The protein is essential to repair the muscle fibers we just worked, so as long as its coming from a lean source have at it! A Protein shake before and after is a good idea so your body doesn't go into a catabolic state (muscle used as a partial fuel). You can do all the training in the world but if you don't get adequate protein or rest, your sacrificing some of the work you put in.
Moving on to the H.I.I.T. (High Intensity Interval Training). This has been studied at Harvard Medical and the results are substantial. They performed a double- blind study where one group of 8 people performed steady state cardio 3 times a week on an elliptical or treadmill. While the other group performed 3 H.I.I.T. sessions a week. The results concluded that the steady state group actually gained weight. The reasoning for this is that steady state cardio only burns calories directly during the activity. There also seemed to be a mentality that if they did this cardio 3 times a week the diet can be less strict, which proved to be completely prohibitive to their weight loss! The H.I.I.T. group lost an average of 1- 1.5 lbs. per week. The reasoning behind this is the fact that intervals not only burn more calories during the session, but also after the sessions, due to growth hormone response from the sprints which will increase your caloric expenditure for up to 48 hrs. after the session!

The cardio craze was brought about in the 80's and the only people who can seem to maintian it are those who can put in 5+ hrs. a week which is not attainable for most and can be damaging if you are already over weight. The scary thing about steady state cardio is it may damage your knees, hips, and will produce a hormone called cortisol, which actually triggers the body to start using muscle for an energy source. This is good if you're training for a marathon, your body is smart enough, and will drop weight however it can, including burning muscle mass for fuel. The problem with this is the fact that your resting metabolism is measured by your bodily organ functions and their mass (including muscle) as well as your daily activities. If you lower your muscle mass guess what happens? You lower the amount of calories you burn EVERY DAY! If you increase your muscle mass (living organ) you burn more calories a day on top of your strength training sessions as well as your H.I.I.T sessions! Now all you have to do is don't eat like the people at the state fair and your on your way to a better and longer life!

Hey Jeff,
Just wanted to let you know how excited I am about our new training schedule. The H.I.I.T.S. training after the weight training is really going to take it to the next level for me. In fact, Jenny and I went out this morning to the soccer field by our house and ran one figure 8 and then did 3 sets of suicides. You should do a post about the HIITS, training. So again thanks. Now I have a couple of questions. You said for me a 6'2" male 250 lbs, weight training 3 days a week, I should be getting 150 grams of protein a day. Q: Is it ok to have a 46 gram protein shake for breakfast and a 23g when I get home before dinner?

Another myth I keep hearing is "our exercise plan will turn your fat into muscle!" Fat cell are fat cells and muscle cells are muscle cells, you cannot turn one into the other. And, as you mentioned, I am always hearing ads claiming some food or supplement can "burn the fat away" if you eat it.
